Author note from Kenneth Reece – After the bitter cold snap to end 2017 and to start 2018, my curiosity was piqued to research what the coldest wind chills for Boone were. Much like when I researched and put together the pages on High Country Tornado History, High Country Earthquake History, and Boone Wind Gust History, there was not an easily found outlet that already had the information compiled.

Below is a list of wind chill values ranging from the coldest of -39°F to -20°F, as compiled from data from the weather reporting station at Watauga Medical Center. At least 3,214 times the wind chill was -0.1°F or below, starting from when data was first available in January 2000 through December 31, 2018.

The Record: January 7, 2014

The most extreme wind chill event on record occurred on January 7, 2014 at 4:55 AM, when the temperature dropped to -6.9°F with WNW winds gusting up to 55.2 mph, creating a bone-chilling wind chill of -39°F. This dangerous cold snap dominated the morning hours with multiple readings below -30°F.
