Boone Police Department PSA: use safe financial transaction practices when engaging in wire fund transfers

Last Updated on September 4, 2024 7:19 pm

The Boone Police Department would like to remind our citizens of using safe financial transaction practices when engaging in wire fund transfers.

Boone Police Detectives are asking those who engage in wire fund transfers as a standard of practice of their industry, and those who are clients of industries using wire fund transfers, as a standard of practice, be mindful and ensure they are interacting with actual known persons and businesses when exchanging emails.

We are observing a trend of business or citizen email account takeover, as well as closely related/altered email addresses (“fishing” attempts), making it appear that the recipient is receiving an email from a known sender. We are asking that those receiving emails regarding wire fund transfers ensure that the emails are coming from an actual sender by contacting the person or businesses at known telephone numbers and not just telephone numbers found in emails.

If you are an individual or a business operator and are unsure of the authenticity of an email, the Boone Police Department encourages you to reach out to the known entity prior to taking any action.

If you believe you are a victim of this type of fraudulent activity, we encourage you to file a police report in the jurisdiction that you reside.
