BOONE — The Boone Town Council meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, in the Town Council Chambers at 1500 Blowing Rock Road.
It is a short agenda. Council will hear from the Downtown Development Director, consider an expansion of the downtown hellbender mural, discuss a state workforce housing program, and make an appointment to the Historic Preservation Commission.
Note the start time. Council's Aug. 26 meeting began at 5 p.m.; this one is a morning meeting, as the Aug. 12 meeting was.

CONSENT AGENDA
One item is on the consent agenda: consideration of a hellbender mural expansion. The agenda includes no further detail.
The existing hellbender mural, painted by artist Josh Johnston, was unveiled on Howard Street in downtown Boone in August 2024. It was the final installment in the Center for Biological Diversity's Endangered Species Mural Project, and was produced in collaboration with the Boone Town Council, the Downtown Boone Development Association, MountainTrue, the Watauga Arts Council and the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts.
PLANNING MATTERS
Council will discuss the Renew NC Workforce Housing for Ownership Program.
The state announced the program Aug. 25 through the Department of Commerce's Division of Community Revitalization. It makes $53.38 million in federal funds available for for-sale housing serving households earning up to 80% of area median income in 16 western North Carolina counties affected by Hurricane Helene, including Watauga.
Awards range from $2 million to $5 million per project. Eligible applicants include for-profit and nonprofit developers, community land trusts, public housing authorities, units of local government and joint ventures among them. The application window opened Aug. 25 and closes Dec. 13 at 5 p.m.
COUNCIL MATTERS
Council will consider an appointment to the Historic Preservation Commission.
