Summer break has once again ended for teachers and staff, and soon for students, as another school year is upon us. This year Watauga County students will have had 66 days off for the 2015 summer break, from June 13th (the first full day without school as the 12th was a half a day) to August 18th (the first full school day). That's one day extra than the previous two summer breaks.
For the third year in a row schools released on June 12, which before then was the latest release date since the 1996-97 calendar year. Two reasons factor into the shorter than usual summer once again. 17 days of school were missed due to winter weather for the 2014-15 school year, and North Carolina legislation, which went into effect in 2013-14, requires schools to start no earlier than the Monday closest to August 26.
