The Avery County Sheriff's Office is reporting the arrest of a woman who called them for assistance but was found in possession of a stolen vehicle.

On Saturday, August 17th, Capt. Lee Buchanan was called by Cheryl Webb asking for assistance in that “she had run out of gas and had not eaten in days and needed help.”

The Sheriff's Office says, being a public servant, Capt. Lee Buchanan notified the deputies working that day to go there and assist until he could get there.” Once deputies arrived, to their astonishment, Webb was in a vehicle that had been reported stolen in the Elk Park area the night before.

Webb and another occupant of the vehicle, Logan Winegar were both placed under arrest for felony possession of a stolen vehicle. Other charges are being investigated. “We appreciate that people feel they can call us to help them out when they are in need, but if the need is to help get gas in a stolen vehicle, then we will provide them a place to stay and food to eat but no gas” stated Sheriff Kevin Frye.

Logan Winegar, 29, is from Log Cabin Lane in Newland and Cheryl Webb, 25, is from Elk Park.
