On July 21, 2024 Deputy Cyle Hicks, with the Avery County Sheriff's Office, was patrolling the area of Elk Park and attempted to initiate a traffic stop with a motorcycle for speeding and reckless driving. The motorcycle failed to stop and vehicle pursuit ensued.
The driver, identified as Zachary Cylde Johnson, was arrested and charged with Felony Speeding to Elude Arrest.
Johnson was transported to the Avery County Detention Center where he was released on a $25,000 bond.
