The Avery County Sheriff’s Office regularly receives reports of phone scams from 800, 888 and 866 numbers. The calls often target the elderly population. Recently a complaint was made about a phone call from an 800 number to members of the Hispanic population in Avery County. The caller said that the local power company would turn the power off if the purchase of an item costing some $500.00 wasn’t made soon. A google search of the 800 number showed similar scams from that number. Sheriff Frye urges citizens not to release personal information to callers from these numbers or to send money to them.
