Ashe County officials are warning residents about confirmed rabies activity among wildlife in the area.
Recent cases have been reported in Laurel Springs, Crumpler and West Jefferson, according to Ashe County Animal Control.
Officials urged residents to keep pets' rabies vaccinations up to date. North Carolina law requires all dogs and cats to receive a rabies vaccination by 4 months of age. The first vaccine is effective for one year, while subsequent vaccines are effective for three years with proof of previous vaccination.
Animal Control advised residents to avoid contact with wild or unfamiliar animals, not handle sick or injured wildlife, and supervise pets when outdoors.
Any suspicious animal behavior should be reported to Ashe County Animal Control immediately at 336-982-4060.
