Ashe County, NC — January 25, 2026 — In response to the ongoing ice and snowstorm impacting Ashe County, county officials have taken multiple proactive measures to ensure public safety and coordinate emergency response efforts.

In advance of the storm, Ashe County officials, along with the towns of Lansing, Jefferson, and West Jefferson, declared a local State of Emergency on January 22 to allow for early preparedness actions and resource coordination. On January 24, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issued a disaster declaration related to the storm event, further supporting response and recovery efforts.

The Ashe County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) was opened Saturday morning to support interagency coordination and continuous situational monitoring. Additionally, an emergency shelter was opened at Ashe County High School to provide a safe, warm location for residents in need.

All Ashe County fire and rescue departments have been on active standby since 2:00 p.m. Saturday and remain prepared to respond to emergencies as conditions allow. Emergency management, public safety, and partner agencies continue to assess conditions and prioritize life-safety operations.

Road conditions across the county are currently ice-covered and extremely treacherous. Residents are strongly urged to stay off roadways unless travel is absolutely necessary. Icy conditions significantly increase the risk of crashes and may delay emergency response.

Ashe County officials will continue to monitor the storm and provide updates as conditions evolve. The public is encouraged to follow official county communications and local media outlets for the latest information.

Public safety remains the highest priority. Please stay home, stay safe, and avoid unnecessary travel.
