If there is ever a “normal” regarding traffic in Watauga County then Monday will signal the return of it. January 4th-8th will be the first full work week for many area motorist since before the Christmas break.
Monday (January 4) will also mark the return of Watauga County Schools from the holiday break. Though weather is not expected be a factor it will be cold with single digit wind chills possible. In January 2015 the school system missed one day the first week back (January 8), one day the second week back (January 14) and then five days from January 26th-February 3rd (those days missed were mainly due to the extreme cold and not snow). In January 2014 the system missed all five days back following the break due to extreme cold and winter weather.
Also leading back to the traffic “normalcy” throughout the week will be the return of Appalachian State students. Pre-class items such as move in and orientation for transfer and freshmen takes place Wednesday & Thursday. First day of classes for everyone is Monday January 11.
