BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State outside linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither has been named the Sun Belt Conference's Defensive Player of the Week following a 14-tackle performance in a 21-10 victory against Troy.
Davis-Gaither had two tackles for loss among his six stops that held the Trojans to a gain of 2 yards or less as App State (9-2, 7-1) won the Sun Belt's East Division title and earned the right to host the inaugural Sun Belt Championship Game against Louisiana on Saturday in Boone. He also broke up a pass to lead a defense that, in holding an opponent to 10 points for less for the seventh time this season, limited Troy to season lows in scoring and rushing offense (62 yards on 27 attempts).
In posting at least 14 tackles for the third time in Sun Belt play, Davis-Gaither finished the regular season averaging 9.0 tackles per league game. That averaged ranked third overall in the Sun Belt and first among players from bowl-eligible teams.
For the year, he has 89 tackles, eight tackles for loss, six pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one sack.
