Tuesday Motorist Delays On Boone Mountain/421 In Vilas Due to Overturn Truck

Traffic was delayed and detoured on highway 421/Boone Mountain in Vilas for a little more than an hour on Tuesday afternoon, after a dump truck overturn into a local parking lot. The truck, carrying a full load of gravel, came to rest on the driver's side in the Quality Plus gas station parking lot. Power lines in the area were also brought down, preventing cars from using highway 421. Linville Creek Road was used a detour until EMS officials could get the driver out of the truck and clear the power lines. Details about the condition of the truck driver were not immediately available on Tuesday afternoon.

The accident occurred just before 3pm, and the road was back open just after 4pm.


4:02pm – Both lanes of 421 are back open according to scanner dispatch. Quality Plus will continue to be shut down for an unknown amount of time.

3:33pm – Traffic continues to be diverted on highway 421/Boone Mountain. According to scanner dispatches, officials are working on a plan to get the road re-open now. Expect continue detours and delays in that area.

2:50pm –  Overturned dump truck full of gravel at Quality Plus at the bottom of Boone Mountain/421 in Vilas. US HWY 421 N may be blocked for up to a half hour, according to Watauga County Communications dispatch office. Power lines are across the road and preventing any passage of cars. Officers are using Linville Creek Rd as a detour.
