*Editor’s note – In reporting on accidents in Watauga County and the High Country it’s not unusual for medical helicopter transports to be a part of the story. Thankfully in this situation it was not one of the crews that regularly flies from Johnson City to the High Country.*
A medical helicopter crashed just outside Mountain City Tennessee on Friday afternoon, just moments after take off to airlift a patient. The helicopter was responding to a victim of a car accident on Highway 91 in the Laurel Bloomery community. The helicopter was around 100 feet in the air when a problem occurred and it fell to the ground, according to multiple media reports.
The pilot was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries and has since been released. The initial car crash patient was transported via another helicopter. The helicopter was from Wellmont Health System, serving the Kingsport/Bristol/Johnson City region, but is contracted for use through PHI Air Medical.
