First Coach Of The Watauga County Swim Team Passes Away

The first ever coach of the Watauga County Swim team passed away recently.

Dr. Edgar Ole Larson, age 96, died peacefully at his home in Boone on Saturday, November 18th, according to Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Larson became a member of the Appalachian State University faculty in 1968, as a professor and men’s swimming coach. He retired in 1985 and was inducted into the Appalachian State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012

Among his accomplishments:

Professor and coach at Northern Montana State College and at Valparaiso University.

Held multiple degrees from St. Olaf College, Washington State University and University of Oregon.

A memorial service will be held for Dr. Larson at 1:00 p.m. on December 9th at Grace Lutheran Church in Boone. A reception to receive friends will be held by the family immediately following the service from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
