Woolly Worm Festival organizers held a special race in downtown Banner Elk last weekend.
On Sunday, October 20th, the race was held to honor Avery County first responders, who have put in countless hours since Hurricane Helene. The Newland Fire Department's worm came out on top in a close race.
A cold, snowy winter is on tap, according to the winning worm.
“Helene is no match for the Woolly Worm! Check out the very mini Woolly Worm Festival today!”, was the caption from Visit Banner Elk Facebook page.
“We certainly missed having the big event this weekend due to storm recovery. Thanks to festival organizers for bringing some “normalcy”. The winning Worm predicts a cold start and finish this winter. See you next Oct!””, the post went on to say.
