On August 4, 2024, at 00:57, a Deputy attempted to stop a 2000 BMW sedan on US 421 in the Cove Creek community. The vehicle initially slowed down but then accelerated quickly, prompting a pursuit towards Tennessee. The driver turned onto Old 421 and took Emory Greer Road back to 421. Despite the deployment of stop sticks, the driver continued toward Boone, evading capture.
The pursuit, continued through Boone and into Blowing Rock on HWY 321, ended dramatically when the BMW lost control in the curve past the Green Park Inn, resulting in a crash.
The driver, identified as Malachi Tyrese Johnson age 25 of Greensboro, NC, was taken into custody.
Johnson and a 17-year-old female passenger were transported to Watauga Medical Center for evaluation. The 17-year-old was then transported to Baptist hospital for treatment and is not facing any charges at this time.
Johnson was found to be wanted in Forsyth County for multiple offenses, including Failure to Appear for Driving While License Revoked, DWI, Reckless Driving, Possession of Cocaine, resisting a Public Officer, and Carrying a Concealed Weapon.
In addition to these charges, Johnson has been charged in Watauga County with Felony Flee to Elude Arrest, and the vehicle has been seized under the Run and Done law.
Johnson is currently in the Watauga County Jail with a $58,500 bond
The pursuit saw significant cooperation from Boone and Blowing Rock Police Departments, whose assistance was invaluable in bringing the situation to a safe conclusion.
