High Country Gas Prices Drop to $3.77 This Week — Lowest Local Low in Months

Gas prices in the High Country are falling fast, with the Boone-area low for regular unleaded dropping to $3.77 per gallon at Sheetz on Chestnut Drive — down 16 cents from last Tuesday's area low of $3.93 and the lowest local price seen in months.

Most Boone-area stations are ranging from $3.79 to $3.85 per gallon for regular as of Tuesday morning, according to GasBuddy. Circle K on Blowing Rock Road is at $3.79, and multiple stations including Speedway and Circle K locations are at $3.82 to $3.85.

The North Carolina average stands at $3.921 per gallon, according to AAA — down from $4.145 last week. The national average is $4.290 per gallon, down from $4.491 last week. AAA this week asked the question many drivers are wondering: “Gas Prices are Falling, but Will They Keep Going Down?”

Diesel prices are also dropping significantly. The county's diesel low is $4.99 per gallon at the Speedway in Banner Elk — the first time the county low has fallen below $5.00 in recent months. Most Boone-area stations are ranging from $5.19 to $5.49 for diesel, down from $5.48 to $5.52 last week.

Despite the recent decline, prices remain well above last year. AAA puts North Carolina's year-ago regular average at $2.806 per gallon, meaning drivers are still paying more than $1.10 more per gallon than this time in 2025.

WataugaOnline publishes a weekly gas prices report. Prices are sourced from GasBuddy and AAA. Prices may vary by location and change after posting.
