High Country Gas Prices Dip Below $4.10 This Week; Boone Low at $4.01

Boone-area drivers are getting a modest break at the pump this week, with the local low for regular unleaded dropping to $4.01 per gallon at Sheetz on Chestnut Drive — down more than 10 cents from last Tuesday's area low of $4.13.

Most Boone-area stations are ranging from $4.03 to $4.14 per gallon for regular as of Monday morning, according to GasBuddy. The North Carolina average stands at $4.219 per gallon, according to AAA, while the national average is $4.528 per gallon.

Despite the slight local improvement, prices remain dramatically elevated compared to a year ago, when the Boone area was averaging well under $3.00 per gallon. North Carolina's statewide average has climbed more than 35 cents in the past month alone, according to AAA.

Diesel prices remain a significant burden for commercial drivers and farmers in the region. The county's diesel low is $5.33 per gallon at the Speedway in Banner Elk. The lowest Boone price for diesel is $5.49 at Quality Plus on Calloway Road, with most Boone stations ranging from $5.60 to $5.79.

The ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran continues to disrupt oil shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, keeping upward pressure on global crude prices. While analysts have noted some softening in crude futures in recent days, that has not yet translated into meaningful savings at most High Country pumps.
