Gas prices across the High Country climbed again this week, with most Boone-area stations ranging from $4.13 to $4.19 per gallon as of Tuesday morning, May 12, 2026 — up 15 to 20 cents from last Monday's report.
Here's where prices stand as of Tuesday morning, May 12, 2026:
- Boone Area Low (Regular): $4.13/gallon (Sheetz, 140 Chestnut Dr)
- Most Boone Stations: $4.17–$4.19/gallon
- Diesel (Local Low): $5.35/gallon (Speedway, Banner Elk)
- Diesel (Most Boone Stations): $5.69/gallon
- North Carolina Average: $4.16/gallon
- National Average: $4.52/gallon
The national average has now surpassed $4.50 per gallon for the first time since the summer of 2022, driven by the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran and the continued disruption of oil shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. At this time last year, the national average stood near $3.00 per gallon — meaning drivers are paying more than $1.50 per gallon more today.
One slight bright spot: diesel's local low dropped to $5.35 at the Speedway in Banner Elk, down from $5.46 last week, though most Boone-area diesel stations remain at $5.69.
