Flood Advisory for Watauga & Wilkes until 8:15pm – Monday August 24, 2020

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a

  • Flood Advisory for…
    Southeastern Watauga County in northwestern North Carolina…
    Southwestern Wilkes County in northwestern North Carolina…
  • Until 815 PM EDT.
  • At 615 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to
    thunderstorms. Minor flooding is expected to begin shortly in the
    advisory area. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen since
    515pm, based on radar.

Some locations that will experience flooding include…
Blowing Rock, Darby, Elkville and Moses Cone Memorial Park.

This includes the following streams and drainages…
Mill Creek, Flat Branch, Big Warrior Creek, Elk Creek, North Prong
Lewis Fork, Shell Creek, Left Prong Stony Fork, Little Dugger
Creek, South Prong Lewis Fork, South Fork Laurel Creek, Dugger
Creek and Beaver Creek.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, country roads, farmland, and other low lying
spots.

When it is safe to do so, please send your reports of flooding,
including mudslides or flooded roads, to the National Weather
Service by calling toll free at 1…8 6 6…2 1 5…4 3 2 4. Reports
and pictures can also be shared on the National Weather Service
Blacksburg Facebook page and on Twitter.
