Jose Romero-Garcia of Lenoir tried his luck on a $10 scratch-off and collected a $700,000 prize.
Romero-Garcia bought his lucky Scorching Hot 7s ticket from Cheekās Convenience & Grill on Blowing Rock Boulevard in Lenoir. He claimed his prize Friday at lottery headquarters and, after required federal and state withholdings, took home $497,073.
The Scorching Hot 7s game debuted in April with four top prizes of $700,000. One $700,000 prize remains to be claimed.
Ticket sales from scratch-off games make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $2.5 million a day on average for education. A $15 million grant, using money raised by the lottery, helped Caldwell County build the new Granite Falls Middle School.
