The Avery County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) is addressing false claims of a large number of hypothermia deaths.
“If you hear that 15 people died overnight Monday into Tuesday morning from hypothermia at an Avery County field hospital, that rumor is FALSE.”, according to a statement from ACSO.
The statement from ACSO is in response to an X post by Dr Mollie James on Tuesday, October 15, that stated
“Urgent needs at Avery: 15 deaths overnight due to hypothermia, including children Fluid warmer Blanket warmers Nebulizers Albuterol Budesonide”
“Again this post is NOT TRUE! There have been NO deaths in Avery County or in any other Western North Carolina County from hypothermia.”, ACSO reiterated in their statement.
