ATLANTA — FEMA is awarding more than $101 million to North Carolina, funding 52 projects that will accelerate disaster recovery and build resilience in communities.

With this funding, President Donald J. Trump is keeping his promise to reform federal disaster support and ensure that taxpayer money is spent only on projects and programs that deliver safety and security to the American people.

The state will receive more than $100 million through FEMA’s Public Assistance program, which provides federal reimbursement to communities after a disaster for debris removal, emergency protective measures taken to reduce or eliminate disaster impacts, and to repair or rebuild damaged critical infrastructure. Public Assistance grants announced today include:

  • More than $49.4 million to North Carolina Emergency Management for debris removal efforts and emergency protective measures taken following Hurricane Helene.
  • More than $10.8 million to North Carolina Department of Transportation for emergency protective measures and road and bridge repairs across Western North Carolina following Helene.
  • More than $6.7 million to Asheville for debris removal efforts, a temporary bridge and repairs to the Biltmore Village street lighting system following Helene.
  • More than $5.4 million to Haywood Electric Membership Corporation for repairs to public utilities.
  • More than $4.9 million to Lake Lure for repairs to public facilities.
  • More than $2.1 million to Banner Elk for culvert repairs and a bridge replacement.
  • More than $1 million to Canton for repairs to damaged facilities and for the architectural and engineering services to evaluate repair or replacement alternatives for the fire station.

FEMA is also awarding the state more than $1 million for projects that will prevent, eliminate or reduce future disaster-related damage. This money is being distributed through FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. Through this program, state, local or territory governments and Tribal Nations take proactive mitigation measures such as acquiring hazard-prone homes and businesses, adopting and enforcing building codes and standards, protecting against floods through elevations and drainage improvement projects, building safe rooms and upgrading utilities and infrastructure.

The projects include:

  • More than $793,000 to Dare County for the acquisition of flood-damaged properties.
  • More than $284,000 to Pamlico County for a mitigation reconstruction project.

This funding is part of more than $896 million that FEMA announced for more than 620 projects nationwide and is the latest example of the billions of dollars in disaster recovery provided by FEMA to support state and local communities as they work to rebuild from recent natural disasters.
