A fire in Avery County over the weekend claimed the life of an Elk Park woman. In a statement by Avery County Sheriff Kevin Frye, on Monday afternoon, the identification of the woman was released. His statement follows below:
Shortly after 1:00am on Saturday, (February 6, 2016) fire departments, EMS and law enforcement were dispatched to 220 Reservoir Hill in the town of Elk Park in Avery County. Fire departments found a single wide trailer belonging to Joyce K. Shoemaker, age 73, of Elk Park fully involved in fire. Shortly after entry was made by firefighters they discovered a body within the trailer. Avery County Sheriff’s Office along with the NC SBI are working the fatal fire. “ We feel so sorry for the family, friends and neighbors of Mrs. Shoemaker, she was a wonderful lady and was held in great regard by those who knew her. At this time it appears by all circumstances this was an accidental fire and there is nothing of criminal concern, we just offer our thoughts and prayers to all concerned as they process this tremendous loss.” Sheriff Frye stated.
