BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University Office of General Counsel Attorney Crawford H. Cleveland III has been elected to the North Carolina State Bar Council by the attorneys of the 35th Judicial District Bar. The election was held during the district bar’s annual meeting last month at the Avery County Courthouse.

Cleveland will serve an initial three-year term as a state bar councilor, representing attorneys from Watauga, Avery, Mitchell, Yancey and Madison counties at quarterly meetings held at the State Bar building in Raleigh.

The North Carolina State Bar is the government agency responsible for the regulation of the legal profession in the state. It is governed by a 60-member State Bar Council whose members are lawyers elected by the lawyers in their communities, as well as three non-lawyer members of the council, who are appointed by the governor and other elected officials.

Dedicated to supporting the legal community, Cleveland has served in a number of leadership positions. He was elected as president of the 35th Judicial District Bar for the 2021–22 term, appointed as vice chair of the Board of Directors for the State Bar Lawyer Assistance Program in 2020 and has served as president of the Watauga County Bar Association twice. He is also a graduate of the University of North Carolina System Executive Leadership Institute, completing the program in June 2024.
