Victim of March 21st drowning identified

The identity of a man found in the New River in late March has been released.

Sheriff Len Hagaman states that Michael Wayne Brassfield, age 55, was the man found on Sunday, March 21, 2021.

The body was found just before 2 pm by a group of fisherman behind the business of Hollar and Greene at 230 Cabbage Row.

Watauga County Sheriff’s Office Detective Watson responded and investigated the incident and on March 24 an autopsy was performed at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital. Sheriff Hagaman states that it was determined that Mr. Brassfield was the victim of accidental drowning and that there was no evidence of foul play.  

Members from the Watauga County Emergency Medical Services, Boone Fire Department, Boone Police Department, and the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.
