Because of ongoing construction between Valle Crucis and Banner Elk, NCDOT is strongly advising that motorist avoid 194 and use highway 105 as a connector between the two events.
A portion of that highway is still down to one lane and will continue to be into next year, but the newly built section in the curve just before Dutch Creek Road and Valle Crucis Mission School is on schedule to be open by the weekend.
The Saturday that both events are held annually is usually the single largest one day traffic flow into and around the High Country. NCDOT and area law enforcement are hoping to avoid problems on a road that has seen its fair share already. Just in the last couple of months the road had to be totally shut down after three tractor and trailers on three seperate occasions got stuck.
Work continues on retaining walls at two sites on the road, milled a portion of road to help identify possible areas to work on before paving operations begin. The entire road project is not slated for completion until June 2012.
