Two earthquakes measured near Sparta overnight

Two earthquakes were recorded near Sparta in Alleghany County overnight. 

The first measured 2.3 and was centered 1.3 miles east of Sparta, 27.2 miles west of Mount Airy, and 37.7 miles east-northeast of Boone at 3:41 am, according to the United States Geological Society.  

The second also measured 2.3 and was centered 3.6 miles southeast of Sparta, 26.6 miles west of Mount Airy, and 37 miles east-northeast of Boone at 4:16 am, according to the United States Geological Society.  

The last time an earthquake occurred close to Boone was on Saturday, January 28, 2023, when a 1.8 magnitude was recorded near Fleetwood.
