Stephen Poulos, the former long-time Watauga County Parks & Recreation Director, has been awarded the Officials of Excellence Award by the North Carolina Athletic Directors Association.

In a ceremony on Monday night in Asheville, Poulos accepted his award.

He shared his thoughts with WataugaOnline.com via email, “I was nominated without my knowledge by Watauga HS AD Coach Dustin Kerley for this award. When I got the email I had no clue honestly what it was.”

He went on to say, “Went to Asheville today (Monday), it was a very nice event, very humbled and honored to be recognized, been calling NCHSAA football since 1994. So many mentors and friends who have been part of my story and journey.”

The passion to be a part of officiating games is still there as Poulos also noted, “Still love calling today as much as when I first began. Something about Friday Night Lights. We need officials, all sports, all levels, NCHSAA, Watauga Co P&R, etc.”

Poulos retired from Watauga Parks & Rec, after 30 years of service, in 2022.
