Special Olympics Southeast U.S. Winter Games—Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding to be held at Appalachian Ski Mountain Feb. 11-13

Nearly 170 Special Olympics athletes from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee will participate in the Special Olympics Southeast U.S. Winter Games – Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding competition at Appalachian Ski Mountain, Feb. 11-13. Special Olympics North Carolina (SONC) athletes will be competing from the following local programs: Buncombe, Burke, Cabarrus, Gaston, Guilford, High Point, Iredell, Johnston, Lake Norman, Mecklenburg, Wake and Watauga.

Special Olympics athletes will receive instruction from professional ski and snowboard instructors from French Swiss Ski College, then compete against their peers in ski and snowboard courses.

SONC encourages supporters and the public to attend the competition as spectators at no charge. Spectator viewing areas are available on the large porch attached to the lodge and on the third floor in the Snow Cloud Room. Awards will be presented in the dining room annex, located on the same floor as the cafeteria. Volunteer registration for the event is still open.

SCHEDULE: 

Sunday, Feb. 11

  • 1:30 p.m. – Athlete Instruction Begins
  • 4:30 p.m. – Athlete Instruction Ends

Monday, Feb. 12

  • 9:30 a.m. – Opening Ceremony
  • 10 a.m. – Time Trials and Competition Begins
  • 1:30 p.m. – Awards Begin
  • 3:30 p.m. – Time Trials and Competition Conclude

Tuesday, Feb. 13

  • 10:30 a.m. – Competition and Awards Begin
  • 1 p.m. – Competition and Awards Conclude
