Small Earthquake Measured Just South Of The High Country Tuesday

A 2.2 magnitude earthquake was registered in the early morning hours of Tuesday near Spruce Pine, according to the US Geological Survey. The epicenter was located 4 miles south of Spruce Pine, 22 miles WNW of Morganton, 29 miles west of Lenoir and 32 miles ENE of Asheville. The quake occurred at 4:49am.

The last recorded earthquake felt in the High Country happen nearly one year ago to the day. A 3.0 magnitude, centered 14 miles southeast of Boone, was measured on December 15, 2014. That followed a 2.1 magnitude recorded the previous day. In 2014 alone there were 6 recorded quakes felt in the High Country. For more history and data see High Country Earthquake History
