Section of Elk Creek Road Closed Indefinitely Due To Mudslide

UPDATE – Thursday June 13 1:33pm – The section of Elk Creek Road that was closed due to mudslide is back open, according to Jay Kerley with Emergency Management.


Elk Creek Road is closed indefinitely to all traffic around the 7700 block due to a large mudslide, according to Jay Kerley with Watauga County Emergency Management. Kerley tells WataugaOnline.com that NCDOT is working on the situation and estimates are it will take about a week to repair, depending on the weather.

Highway 268 is the recommended detour. Sampson Road can also be used as a detour.

Elk Creek Mudslide

A large mudslide occured around the 7000 block of Elk Creek Road near Triplett late Sunday evening, this was the scene this morning.
