Notable Passing: Former Commissioner Chairman & Retired Dentist Passes

A former chairman of the Watauga County Commissioners, and retired local dentist, passed away on Friday morning.

Dr. Jack D. Lawrence Sr., age 97, passed at his home on Leah Drive, according to Hampton Funeral Home. Dr. Lawrence was the chairman of the Watauga County Commissioners in the late 1990s, and retired from practicing dentistry after 35 plus years in Boone.

Dr. Lawrence was also a charter member of Greenway Baptist Church, and past president of the North Carolina Baptist Men, according to his obituary. He was also a WWII veteran having served in the United States Army.

Funeral services for Dr. Jack D. Lawrence, Sr. will be conducted Sunday afternoon, April 9, 2017, at 1:30 PM, at Greenway Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 3:30 until 4:30 PM. Officiating will be Reverend Fred Andrews and Jarrett Whiteside. Graveside services, for the family, will be held Monday afternoon, at 1:30 PM, at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will receive friends, from 5:30 until 7:00 o’clock, at the church, following the service.
