A North Carolina Highway Patrolman serving Avery County has passed away from an apparent heart attack. Trooper Brandon Peterson died unexpectedly on Friday morning, according to a post on the Avery County Sheriff's Office Facebook page.
In early March, Peterson was named Highway Patrolman of the Year by the North Carolina Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. At the time District Attorney Seth Banks said of Peterson, “Trooper Peterson exhibits the highest virtues of professionalism to which someone in law enforcement or public service can aspire,.” Banks added, “This is a well deserved honor, and a testament to his hard work and dedication.”
Peterson was a part of Troop G that covers Yancey, Mitchell, Avery and Madison counties. He is survived by his wife and 3 year old daughter.
In the posting on the Avery County Sheriff's Office page they state, “We at the Avery County Sheriff's Office offer our most heartfelt condolences and prayers to the family of Brandon Peterson. We all have come to know and admire Trooper Peterson for his dedication and professionalism. Please help us lift his wonderful family up in many prayers.”
