One of the most high profile road construction projects in the history of Northwestern North Carolina will have a new contractor at the helm soon.

A report from the High Country Press says that Taylor & Murphy Construction Company, based out of Asheville, is in the process of being replaced as the main contractor due to financial difficulties.

NCDOT Division 11 resident engineer Doug Eller tells the Press that Travelers Insurance took over control of the project last week. Travelers is the bonding company for the project.

A DOT official tells WataugaRoads.com that if a change had to happen the timing is ideal. Not only have recent heavy rains, high winds and winter weather kept construction crews from major construction progress, typically major progress is not expected or planned during the winter seasons.

The project will not come to a standstill however. A new contractor is expected to be announced soon, which will be handled by the bonding company.

Taylor & Murphy was awarded the contract for the project in December 2011. Construction began in early 2012, and the project is scheduled to be completed by Oct. 1, 2015.

According to their company website Taylor & Murphy Construction was founded in 1941 and provides employment to approximately 300 employees. The company operates as a general contracting company in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia.
