Travelers on NC 105 should plan for increased disruptions this week as construction continues on the new bridge over the Watauga River.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation says crews will be working on multiple fronts throughout the week, with both nighttime and daytime impacts expected.
On Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday nights, crews will install storm drainage south of the Watauga River. Lane closures and brief road closures are possible during those overnight work windows.
During the day Monday through Wednesday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., lanes may be temporarily closed or narrowed as daytime construction continues.
NCDOT also notes that travelers may encounter gravel sections on the road throughout the week in areas where existing asphalt has been removed to allow for storm drainage installation. Asphalt will be restored in those sections once the underground work is complete.
No construction is planned for Thursday. NCDOT says the work pause is intended to accommodate Appalachian State University's upcoming commencement ceremonies.
Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and use caution when traveling through the work zone. Real-time travel information is available at DriveNC.gov.
