The North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) had towed a vehicle found abandoned beside U.S. Highway 421 on the night of March 22, 2025. The vehicle’s registered owner, Boles’ mother, was contacted about the vehicle, which prompted her to have the nephew report him missing to the Watauga County Sheriff's Office.
Upon receiving the report, the Watauga County Sheriff's Office immediately launched an investigation and coordinated efforts with multiple agencies:
- The Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office to check known locations where Boles may have been.
- Watauga County Emergency Management, Watauga Rescue Squad, and Deep Gap Fire Department to conduct an area search in the vicinity where the vehicle was last seen.
During the extensive search, Boles was found deceased in a wooded area approximately 225 yards from where his mother’s vehicle had been parked. A glucometer was discovered nearby.
Witnesses interviewed by the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office indicated that Boles, who was diabetic, appeared paranoid and somewhat disoriented when last seen by acquaintances.
