Local Resident Charged With Indecent Liberties With A Child

On June 21, 2017, Watauga County Sheriff’s Office received a report from Watauga County Department of Social Services in reference to the possible inappropriate touching of a child. The report alleged that the child was known to the suspect in the incidents. Watauga County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Unit immediately began an investigation into these incidents. Numerous interviews were conducted and information was gathered by the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office; Children’s Advocacy Center of the Blue Ridge and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

On June 28, 2017, as a result of the investigation and in consultation with the 24th Judicial District Attorney’s Office Michael Dean Powers, W/M, age 54, and a resident of 2103 Brown’s Chapel Road, Boone, NC 28607 was charged with five counts of Indecent Liberties with a Child. He was arrested and taken before a Watauga County Magistrate where he was given a $100,000.00 bond and a court date of July 21, 2017. Michael Dean Powers currently remains in the custody of the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office pending court procedures.
