Former Director Of Medical Services At Appalachian State & Former County Medical Examiner Passes

The former Director of Medical Services at Appalachian State University and a former Watauga County Medical Examiner passed away last week.

Evan H. Ashby, Jr. MD, age 94 and known to many as “Doc”, of Fancy Gap, VA, passed away Feb. 14, 2018 in Hillsville, according to his obituary from Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady funeral home.

Ashby was named Director of Medical Services at Appalachian State University in 1969 and retired in 1991 as Professor Emeritus. He was a also member of the Watauga County Rescue Squad and served as Chief for a time. After retirement he moved to Fancy Gap, Virginia and became a member of the Cana Volunteer Fire Department.

Dr. Ashby was not only a Medical Examiner in North Carolina but also held that position in Virginia until his 85th birthday.

His obituary also notes that while in living in Remington,Virginia, prior to moving to Watauga County, he practiced family medicine and attended the births of over 1600 babies.

A celebration of life will be held at the Cana fire house on March 3 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Remington United Methodist Church, P.O.
