Erwin scored the game-winning touchdown with 20 seconds left to play, defeating Watauga 31-27 on Homecoming Friday night at Watauga High School.
It's the second straight week the Pioneers have lost on a late score — Watauga fell to Mount Airy 35-34 on Sept. 4 after the Bears also scored with 20 seconds remaining.
The loss drops Watauga to 1-3 on the season, a sharp turn from last year's undefeated 15-0 championship run.
With the win, Erwin improves to 3-2. The Warriors travel to face A.C. Reynolds on Friday, Oct. 2, in Mountain 5A/6A Conference play. Reynolds enters that game 1-4 after a 14-7 non-league loss to Freedom.
Watauga returns to action Friday, Sept. 25, hosting Asheville in a non-league matchup. The Cougars come in at 3-1 after a 38-35 non-league win over Asheville School.
