The fifth and sixth earthquakes this summer near Sparta, in Alleghany County, were recorded today.
The first quake measured 2.2 magnitude and was centered 7.1 miles south-southeast of Sparta, 26.4 miles west of Mount Airy, and 36.9 miles east-northeast of Boone at 12:34 am, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The second quake measured 2.0 magnitude and was centered 5.4 miles south of Sparta, 28.1 miles west of Mount Airy, and 34.9 miles east-northeast of Boone at 10:51 am, according to the United States Geological Survey.
These earthquakes, and the four other most recent, are in the area of the earthquake outbreak in 2020.
A 2.2 magnitude quake was recorded between Blowing Rock and Lenoir on July 21, 2024
