Earthquake measured near Sparta, fifth this summer

The fifth earthquake this summer near Sparta, in Alleghany County, was recorded this morning.

This quake measured 2.2 magnitude and was centered 7.1 miles south-southeast of Sparta, 26.4 miles west of Mount Airy, and 36.9 miles east-northeast of Boone at 12:34 am, according to the United States Geological Survey.  

This earthquake, and the four other most recent, are in the area of the earthquake outbreak in 2020.

A 2.2 magnitude quake was recorded between Blowing Rock and Lenoir on July 21, 2024
