On June 11, 2013, at approximately 4:15 PM, Boone Fire Department personnel performing routine fire hydrant maintenance observed a suspicious object lying near a fire hydrant on Lady Slipper Lane, according to press release on Thursday afternoon. Boone Police, Fire, and the Wilkes County Sheriff's Office E.O.D. / Bomb Squad responded to the scene.
It was determined that the object was a homemade explosive device. The device was rendered safe and turned over to the bomb squad for disposal. The investigation into this incident continues.
