Body found in a local river on Sunday

UPDATE Friday, April 2, 2021 – Sheriff Hagaman tells WataugaOnline.com that there are still issues with finding next of kin for the victim.

He also tells WataugaOnline.com that his office is still waiting on autopsy/toxicology results, which are being delayed in part due to COVID issues and other factors.


Update Thursday March 25 – Sheriff Hagaman tells WataugaOnline.com that his office is still trying to find family members of the victim. No other updates regarding cause of death was available from the Medical Examiner's pending report.


A body was discovered in a local river on Sunday afternoon.

Watauga County Sheriff Len Hagaman stated to WataugaOnline.com, on Sunday night, that investigators were trying to obtain the name of the victim and trying to get in touch with family members. The Medical Examiner in Winston Salem has scheduled an autopsy this week, to determine the cause of death. No foul play is suspected currently, according to Sheriff Hagaman.

The location of the body was in the New River, behind Hollar and Greene, just east of the Town of Boone property and was discovered around 2 pm.

The age of the male has not been verified. Boone Police and Boone Fire also assisted in the body recovery.
