Banner Elk history is made with the fire department’s first all female first due engine response

Thursday, October 26 – Banner Elk Fire Fighters were dispatched to a late night multiple sprinkler alarm/possible structure fire. Megan Burr was performing shift coverage and using the opportunity to train two of our new recruits, when the dispatch went out.

The three sprang towards the bay, donned their gear, climbed aboard the truck, preparing to roll down the road. But of course, not before snapping a selfie. Little did they know, it was a moment captured in our fire department’s history.

It wasn’t until performing this morning’s duties, including entering incident call reports, that we realized this feat. These were just three young firefighters, who responded to their community’s call for help, while coincidentally, making history and paving the way for future female firefighters!
