Back To Back Days of 86 Degrees Plus In September Could Be A Record for Boone

Last Updated on November 20, 2019 6:04 pm

The unseasonable hot September temperatures continue as Boone may have set another unofficial record for the month.

Wednesday marked the hottest day of 2019 at the Watauga Medical Center reporting station, topping out at 86.5 degrees. Thursday nearly tied the mark but just missed it at 86.4 degrees.

The last time the WMC station recorded 86 in the month of September was Friday, September 2, 2011. Before that was Tuesday, September 10, 2002. Readings for the WMC station were only available back to 2000.

In referencing unofficial records it's because the Boone 1Se reporting station is the official outlet for temperatures, rainfall and snowfall records. That station recorded a high of 83 for Wednesday and 85 for Thursday.

The hottest recorded September temperature is 92, which occured in Boone on both Sept 5th & 6th 1954. The hottest recorded temperature overall countywide is 96 on July 10, 1936 also in Boone.

Official Boone weather records rely on three different sources. Boone COOP station 310977 was used from 1929-1980 and Boone 1Se 310982 from June 1980-present for temperatures, rainfall and snowfall. Watauga Medical Center reporting station KTNB is used for wind speeds.
