8:07am update – 421 is back open, Hardin Road is still closed. Multiple media outlets are reporting a deputy was involved in the shooting. The State Bureau of Investigation officers are at the scene investigating.

6am – Highway 421 in Deep Gap remains blocked off by law enforcement after an early morning shooting on Hardin Road.
WSOC TV is reporting “The Watauga County sheriff said an officer-involved shooting occurred Thursday morning.” Use OLD 421 S until it's clear per Watauga Communications Center fb page.
