All I-40 East Lanes Now Open Near Tennessee State line

Last Updated on May 20, 2017 6:38 pm

ASHEVILLE – All lanes of eastbound Interstate 40 in Haywood County near the Tennessee state lane opened about 6 p.m. on Saturday, after having been closed since Friday morning by the crash of a tractor trailer loaded with tar at mile marker seven. The extensive cleanup had also required a short overnight closure of the westbound lanes.

The location of the crash and tar spill had allowed for the setup of a very short detour route. Drivers were directed off the interstate at exit seven, and were able to cross over Cold Springs Creek/Harmon Den Road and get right back on the interstate at the exit’s on ramp.

There had been a minimal backup at the closure since traffic volume dropped overnight Friday and on Saturday. When traffic was heavier during the daytime on Friday, even with the short detour, the eastbound backup extended to Tennessee, with drivers west of the I-40/81 interchange being advised to consider the alternate route of I-81 North and I-26 East to get back to I-40 East in Asheville.
