321 Construction Detour FAQ

Last Updated on October 7, 2013 9:15 pm

The most ask question across the Watauga Roads social media outlets, and to NCDOT, about the 321 widening project in Blowing Rock is when the road is closed and the detour routes.

Road closures for blasting and blasting prep operations are scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday from 11:00am to 3:00pm, weather permitting and barring any special events that might generate large volumes of traffic in the area.

The current detour route is along US 321 Business through downtown Blowing Rock. Simply put, ‘the mountain' is not closed but motorist can expect moderate delays (15-20 min) during these closures and should plan accordingly.

Also of note is that access to all homes and businesses is always available. However, during these road closures NCDOT strongly encourages all thru tractor trailer traffic to follow the detour route that is posted through Caldwell and Wilkes Counties.

For more information you are encouraged to call the project hotline at 828-964-3260 Monday – Friday from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm.
