Weather: Showers, thunderstorms & snow all possible to end work week

Update Thursday, January 12 5:24am – A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Watauga & Ashe, while a Winter Weather Advisory and Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Avery.


A mixed bag of weather will be on tap to end the second week of January 2023.

It all begins for the High Country tomorrow (Thursday January 12, 2023) with showers, and a slight chance of thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service. That rain is expected to transition to snow showers after midnight, with much colder temperatures than tonight.

Snow showers are expected to continue Friday, with light accumulations possible for most of the High Country, and higher amounts expected at elevation dependant locations (ie Beech Mountain, Grandfather Mountain, the NC/TN border). Snow showers are expected Friday night as well.

The other weather story will be high winds. Gusts up to 30mph are expected Thursday, up to 45mph Thursday night, 40mph on Friday and Friday night.

High temperatures are forecast for mid 50s Thursday, lower 30s Friday & Saturday, mid 40s Sunday, upper 40s for Martin Luther King Jr Day on Monday.

Lows are forecast for lower 30s Thursday night, lower 20s Friday night & Saturday night, upper 20s Sunday night.
