Last Updated on September 12, 2018 4:29 pm

Watauga County Schools continues to monitor weather forecasts and conditions as Hurricane Florence begins to make landfall over the coming days. Current reports suggest Northwest North Carolina could receive significant winds and rainfall over the weekend and into early next week. Please stay up to date with the most recent forecast from the National Weather Service and monitor updates from the Watauga County Emergency Management Facebook page.

As a preventative measure, WCS maintenance crews have worked to prepare school facilities for heavy rain and possible flooding forcast for the area. Workers also delivered and installed sandbags and barriers to flood-prone areas around the district.

WCS staff are in constant communication with local police, fire and emergency management officials to discuss possible weather impacts to our area. We will monitor weather conditions throughout the weekend and will keep the safety of our students, staff, and parents as our first priority as we consider the operation of schools. Please make preparations now to ensure the safety of your own families.

As always, if changes in the operation of schools are required, they will be communicated as soon as possible on twitter (@wataugaschools), on our website (Wataugaschools.org) and through our usual alert systems/snowline.
